I Like This Song - Siberian Traps' "Lemon Balm" by Prewitt Scott-Jackson

I Like This Song celebrates songs by local bands sans clichéd music journo over-analysis.

The furthest we take the dissection of songs featured here is, well, you guessed it: "I Like This Song."

---

A film by Peter Marsh, shot in Fort Worth, Texas. "Lemon Balm" is from the upcoming Siberian Traps album Indicator, to be released on Dreamy Life Records on June 9, 2017. "Lemon Balm" words and music by Seth Reeves, Chiefchickencharlie Publishing. Performed by Siberian Traps.

Today's featured song is the lead single from Siberian Traps' forthcoming LP Indicatora Dreamy Life Records jam sandwich 'bout to hit your ear mouths on June 9th.

The 'Traps are set - c'mon, I know you liked that pun - to celebrate the album's release this Friday night at Shipping & Receiving with Son of Stan + Programme + Super Secret Records' New Berlin.

Party starts at 8pm, full event details posted here.

Before we move forward, y'all should know there's a killer write-up on Indicator posted over at Aesthetic Magazine; highly recommend you give it a read. The article provides some wonderful insights into the music video's production process as well.

And now I'm gonna talk about actual irl Lemon Balm for a few 'graphs because that's how we do here at FWN.

Lemon Balm: The flower that holds the power

Lemon Balm: The flower that holds the power

Lemon Balm or 'Sweet Melissa' as it is commonly known, has several medicinal properties, making it one of the most beloved plants in the history of humankind (at least for the past 2,000 years anyway).

More so than anything else, Lemon Balm serves as a mild sedative that helps curb stress and anxiety. HELLO! I'm so familiar with stress and anxiety my old law firm was called Scott-Jackson, Stress, & Anxiety LLP.

I've grown Lemon Balm for the past 15 years, I mean, golly, it's practically another family member with its social status resting somewhere between our dog and our goldfish. So one can imagine my delight when the 'Traps dropped this single and music vid.

When I watched the video I perceived a visual representation of Lemon Balm taking hold, the embodiment of its medicinal properties slowly starting to activate.

The video begins with Cameron Smith (War Party) walking alone, robotically striding forward passing by other folks seemingly stuck in the same manic cycle of day-to-day stress.

However, as the video progresses, you can clearly witness the exact moment the 'Balm hits with Smith breaking free of that mechanical pattern via some wicked carefree dance moves (check the 2:55 mark of the video).

The rest of the video's cast subsequently break away as well, taking in a friendly tennis match en route to fully escaping the 'day-to-day' anxiety of the human hamster wheel. Truly fascinating imagery created by the video's director, Peter Marsh (also War Party).

Big final s/o and congrats to Siberian Traps on the new album and music video, can't wait to get our hands on the record this Friday.

Lookie y'all, this was a lost cause from the start, they had me at Lemon Balm ... I like this song.

10 Questions Interview - Dane Rousay by Prewitt Scott-Jackson

Welcome to a special edition of FWN's 10 Questions Interview. We are honored to have San Antonio's Dane Rousay join us today. Be sure to scroll to the bottom of the article for five additional SUPER DOUBLE BONUS DRUMMER QUESTIONS !!!

Rousay's new record, Blip, will be released this Thursday, April 13th. We got the lead track embedded below for 'yer ear drums.

Speaking of drums, we may brand Rousay as the Stephen Hawking of Drummers. Take a look at how he described his process for making this unique record:

"This album is a percussion composition/improvisational effort in the area of chance composition and chance operations. Many of these pieces went through chance processes of assigning numbers to different drums and objects and then programming the computer to flash these numbers randomly at a fast pace on the screen..."

Catch Rousay in Fort Worth this week on April 14th at Shipping & Receiving w/ Richard Haskins (everyone in town has a fun Haskins story, I'll save mine for another day) & Animal Spirit. Full event details here.

Show Poster of the Week - The Future: An Exhibition in Art, Sound, & Movement at Shipping & Receiving by Prewitt Scott-Jackson

Once a week FWN features a show poster from the Fort.

---

This week we are happy to present Raef Payne's vision of a poster for this weekend's epic New Year's Eve event - The Future - taking place Saturday at Shipping & Receiving.

ATN Productions has curated quite the slate of musicians and visual artists but Payne brings it with a surrealistic radiance of a design to match.

Prince Rama and Ronnie Heart and Wizardvizion! Oh my! Starbass Laboratories, Jason Faries (Neon Indian), Squanto, Frida Monet and Raef himself round up this galactic musical lineup.

Many among us believe Aliens and their superior technology aided in constructing the ancient pyramids of Egypt around 2500 BCE. Whether intended or not, in Payne's design, I discern an Alien reconnaissance ship's spectral tractor beam.

The purple and blue-hued tractor beam emits upon an ancient pyramid producing a confluence of 'the sacred' and modernity, one similar to that of what we noted in our inaugural Show Poster of the Week by Jeffrey Chase.

Upon reading the event's prospectus, this juxtaposition of human antiquity and future technologies seems to be what The Future exhibition is all about. Through this lens it's safe to state Payne did a masterful design job aligning with the aura of the event, achieving seamless synchronicity.

By the gods, I swear, I'm currently slacking at work as to research legal loopholes so I can formally marry this design ... I love it so.

Tickets for the event can be purchased here - doors open at 7PM.

Today's featured song comes from Fort Worth's The Crystal Furs and their freshly released dynamite debut full-length.

The eponymous record just released today but its sound takes me back to '90s indie pop favorites like That Dog, Marine Research, or local Dallas personal-favorites of mine, the Lindsey Romig-led Pennywhistle Park.
